Biography

Born in Bistrita, Romania, Stefan Pop studied at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca. He debuted at 21 as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) for the National Romanian Opera, followed by roles as Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) for National Romanian Opera, Jacopo (I due Foscari) for Teatro Regio Parma and his first opera-movie,La traviata for Classica HD at Teatro Massimo Bellini. In 2010 he won both the First Prize and Audience Prize in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition at La Scala, Milan, as well as First Prize in the 6th International Music Competition in Seoul. His 2023/24 Season engagements include the title role of Don Carlo and Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) for Berlin State Opera, Macduff (Macbeth) for Bayerische Staatsoper, Rodolfo for Tokyo Spring Festival and Don Carlo for Semperoper Dresden. Concert engagements include Verdi’s Requiem in Dresden. Previous roles for The Royal Opera include Duke of Mantua, Cavaradossi (Tosca), Foresto (Attila) and Rodolfo. His recording of Tosca was issued on Pentatone in 2023.
