Biography

British director Mathilda du Tillieul McNicol joined the Jette Parker Artists Programme in the 2022/23 Season.   

du Tillieul McNicol studied at the University of Manchester where she graduated with a First-Class Music degree and was awarded the Hargreaves composition prize as well as the prize for academic achievement. She was formerly assistant producer for the Linbury Theatre, and previously worked on the production team at Opera Holland Park. She was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme opera director training cohort, working with Katie Mitchell among others. She was also a member of The Young Vic’s springboard and satellite programmes.  

du Tillieul McNicol has directed La bohème for Nevill Holt Opera and Panic for Montpellier Opera. For the Jette Parker Artists Programme she semi-staged the 20th Anniversary Summer Celebration scenes and created a filmed version of Haydn’s monodrama Arianna a Naxos. During the 2020/21 Season du Tillieul McNicol was on a new work residency with Montpellier Opera and developed two new chamber works with composers. 

As assistant director, du Tillieul McNicol worked with Richard Jones on Das Rheingold and Valkyrie at English National Opera; Rumpelstiltskin, a feature film produced by The Ballet Boyz; and La Clemenza di Tito and Frankenstein!! both for ROH. She also assisted Oliver Mears on The Royal Opera’s Rigoletto. Other assisting credits include La traviata at Nevill Holt Opera, The Cunning Little Vixen at ENO, Nixon in China at Scottish Opera and Rigoletto and Die Zauberflöte for Verbier Festival.
