Biography

Born in Tenerife, Jorge de León studied at the Tenerife Conservatory under Isabel G. Soto. He previously studied with Giuseppe Valdengo and since 2004, has studied with Alfonso García Leoz. He makes his Royal Opera House debut in the 2023/24 Season as Canio in Pagliacci.

Recent engagements include Tosca with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Aida and Turandot for Teatro Real, Madrid, Aida for Wiener Staatsoper, La forza del destino and Tosca for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Aida for the Metropolitan Opera, Turandot for Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari and Pagliacci for the G. Verdi Theatre in Salerno.

Additional noteworthy engagements include Aida and Cavalleria rusticana for La Scala, Milan; Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Macbeth for Vienna; Aida, Manon Lescaut and Un ballo in maschera for Berlin; Tosca for Bayerische Staatsoper; Carmen and Aida for Arena di Verona; Tosca for New National Theatre Tokyo; Tosca, Andrea Chénier, Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, Turandot and Otello for Liceu, Barcelona and Andrea Chénier, Tosca and Madama Butterfly for Madrid.

Awards include the IV Villa Abarán Competition First Prize (1998), Julián Gayarre First Prize (2004), Jaime Aragall Second Prize (2004), Oscar de la Lírica for Best Tenor (2016), Taburiente Award (2022) and Talía Award (2023) from the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts for Best Male Lyric Performer
