Biography

Joint Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre for 12 years, his productions there included All for Love, Medea (also West End, Broadway), Tartuffe, Ivanov, The Tempest and Hamlet (also Broadway), When We Dead Awaken, The Showman, Naked (also West End), Richard II, Coriolanus (also Broadway), Phèdre, Brittanicus, Plenty, Wedekind’s Lulu, Platonov, Faith Healer (also Broadway) and King Lear. Other productions include Peter Gynt, ‘Young Chekhov’, Emperor and Galilean, Le Cid, The False Servant and Oedipus (National Theatre), The Height of the Storm and Man of La Mancha (Broadway), Long Day’s Journey Into Night (American Airlines Theatre, New York), Hecuba (Donmar Warehouse), A German Life (Bridge Theatre), The Height of the Storm, Gypsy, As You Desire Me, The Country Wife, The Sea and Marguerite (West End), Slaves of Solitude, Good People and co-directing Wild Honey (Hampstead) and Sweet Bird of Youth, Sweeney Todd, A Month in the Country, Private Lives (Chichester, West End) and The Forest (Hampstead). Opera credits include Kát’a Kabanová, Adès’s The Tempest and Le nozze di Figaro (Santa Fe), The Turn of the Screw, The Fairy Queen, Don Giovanni and Hippolyte et Aricie (Glyndebourne), Manon Lescaut and Tosca (Royal Opera), A Child of Our Time (ENO), The Flying Dutchman (ENO, Royal Danish Opera) and Die Frau ohne Schatten and Elektra (Mariinsky Theatre). He was made a CBE in 2015.
