Klaus Maria Brandauer is best known for his award-winning performances in films including Mephisto and Out of Africa. Bond fans will know him as the villain Maximillian Largo in Never Say Never Again. Now he is making his Royal Opera debut in the world premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s opera Morgen und Abend.

Brandauer plays a fisherman who confronts existential questions during the birth of his son. The actor describes the libretto by the great Norwegian writer Jon Fosse as ‘full of love for human beings’.

When asked what the experience of watching Morgen und Abend is like, Brandauer can give no easy answers: ‘It’s not possible to explain stories which you have to see and to hear, to listen and to watch. It is a fantastic possibility to listen and reflect.’

Morgen und Abend runs 13-28 November 2015. Tickets are still available.

The production is a co-commission and co-production with Deutsche Oper Berlin and is generously supported by Stefan Sten Olsson, Cockayne - Grants for the Arts via The London Community Foundation, Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and The John S Cohen Foundation.
