Presenter Kirsten O’Brien and Royal Ballet Director Kevin O'Hare explore this iconic Royal Ballet production joined by former Director of The Royal Ballet Dame Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, who re-staged the ballet in its current form in 2006.

Set to well-known music by Tchaikovsky, The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in the Company’s repertory – the production was the first staged at The Royal Ballet’s new home in Covent Garden by Founder Dame Ninette de Vaolois and the ballet was chosen to reopen the Royal Opera house in 1946 after World War II.

The Insight offers a glimpse into rehearsals taken by Monica Mason and Samantha Raine with Olivia Cowley, Kristen McNally, Tierney Heap and Anna Rose O’Sullivan. The participants also discuss the history of the ballet's choreography, as well as the story's origins in fairy tale with Dr Jenny Bavidge, Academic Director for English Literature at the University of Cambridge.

The stream culminates in an additional treat with an excerpt from the 2017 recording of Marianela Nuñez in the role of Princess Aurora dancing with Vadim Muntagirov as Prince Florimund. This recording is available to purchase from our online shop on DVD and Blu-ray.
