Background

For more than three decades, Leeds-based Phoenix Dance Theatre have been at the forefront of contemporary dance in the UK. They return to the Linbury Studio Theatre with an exciting programme of new works, from prominent Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili, rising star Caroline Finn and Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre.

Galili first created Until.With/Out.Enough in 1997, to immersive music by Henryk Górecki. He now revisits the work in this new version, co-commissioned by The Royal Ballet. Watson’s acclaimed DNA-inspired work Repetition of Change was her first exploration of ways to express science through dance. She now investigates the scientific complexity of tears – the surprising truths behind the physical and emotional purposes of crying – in TearFall, with support from the Wellcome Trust. Caroline Finn was an award-winner at the 2014 New Adventures Choreographer Awards, and creates Bloom for Phoenix Dance Theatre as part of the award. With playful, darkly comic choreography, Finn creates a surreal universe populated by tragicomic characters, who gradually emerge from behind their facades as they tell their stories.
