Introduction

When does sound count as music? Can music come about by chance? Can silence be music too? Explore these questions in a spectacular interactive show, in which children are invited to create their own unique musical landscapes.

Background

John Cage won both acclaim and controversy with his ground-breaking explorations of the boundaries between music and sound, most famously in the 'silent' 4'33''. Zonzo Compagnie's Listen to the Silence, named Production of the Year at the 2012 International Young Audiences Music Award, takes Cage's experiments as a springboard into a captivating exploration of the relationships between sound and space and between life and art.

Two performers, an actor and a pianist, use Cage's music and spectacular projections to ask questions about the nature of sound – where audience participation is as much part of the music as what's written on the page. Listen to the Silence not only provides the perfect introduction to contemporary music for young ears, but is a thought-provoking exploration of music and life for adults and children alike.
