Bertrand de Billy

French conductor Bertrand de Billy made his Royal Opera debut in a recital with Roberto Alagna in 1995 and has since conducted Carmen, Cendrillon, Maria Stuarda, Don Carlo and L’elisir d’amore for the Company.

De Billy was born in Paris. Positions include Kapellmeister and Deputy Music Director at Anhaltisches Theater, Dessau (1993–5), Deputy Music Director at Vienna Volksoper (1996–8), Music Director at the Liceu, Barcelona (1999–2004), and Music Director of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (2002–10). He was Principal Guest Conductor of Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester until 2015 and is Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Dresdner Philharmonie. He regularly conducts for companies including Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels, Paris Opéra, Washington National Oper, Los Angeles Opera, Metropolitan Opera, New York, and the Salzburg Festival. He has particularly close associations with Theater an der Wien, Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Konzerthaus and Bavarian State Opera.

De Billy regularly appears in concert internationally, conducting orchestras including Cleveland Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestre de Paris, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester, Hamburg Philharmonic, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Konzerthausorchestra Berlin, Dresden Philharmonic, Royal Danish Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. He conducts a wide repertory that includes Bach and world premieres of new works. De Billy is a Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des letters and has received many other prestigious awards.
