Very special evening: going to From the House of the Dead #ROHhouse, which is the first opera I ever listened to, shortly after reading the novel. Janaček’s intense music is utterly perfect.

Glorious playing of Janáček’s painfully beautiful score, a fantastic ensemble cast and a superb Warlikowski production. Wigglesworth for next ROH music director? A triumph. #rohhouse pic.twitter.com/f6dAFaX7kf

IMHO #ROHhouse is a success: complicated grime prisoners stories were told with a dash of humour, colourful visuals and clarity, not to mention the mesmerising music and singing from the cast. There is hope in humanity after all. pic.twitter.com/gRTqp12cPs

My first operatic Love was Vixen when I was 18. Tonight confirms Janáček hold a special place in my heart.
Even in the darkest places, the freedom in your mind can’t be taken away #ROHhouse

#ROHHouse was so bad I left halfway through. Artistically barren, and didactic. Utter tripe and a total waste of everyone's time.

#ROHHouse of the Dead is a brutal piece dramatically and musically with great contemporary relevance in its highlighting of the brutality of men and the brutalising effect of prison. Superbly performed and characterised by all and thought-provoking direction.

As the title ‘From the House of the Dead’ suggests, it’s not an opera that cheer you up but impressive production and beautiful music. #ROHhouse

My first Janaček. The music was glorious but the postmodernist #ROHHouse was just a little too heavy for me. There might have been glimpses of hope but I was already dead inside the minute the Foucault footage was on the screen. Just wasn’t my cup of tea perhaps? pic.twitter.com/DmY65hwWrn
