Excellent singing, outstanding orchestra, dreadful production. Why do opera houses employ directors like this who put their ‘concept’ above telling the story? Can anyone tell me why Carmen’s first appearance is in a gorilla suit?

Still mulling over @BarrieKosky's #ROHcarmen @RoyalOperaHouse. @GaelleArquez's spirited Carmen, superb stagecraft/vocals from @BrianJagde @EleonoraBuratto #AlexanderVinogradov: all second to none. Brava Keri-Lynn Wilson! The 16-step staircase? Did not really work for me. Sorry!
