ROH Insight event exploring Marius Petipa’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty was livestreamed for free via this page and the Royal Opera House YouTube channel on 7.10pm GMT on 22 November 2016, and you can watch it again on demand.

Presenter Kirsten O’Brien was joined by former Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason to explore this iconic Royal Ballet production.

Set to music by Tchaikovsky, the ballet holds a special place in the Company’s repertory – it reopened the Royal Opera house in 1946 after World War II, and was the first production staged at The Royal Ballet’s new home in Covent Garden.

The ballet has become synonymous with a number of Royal Ballet greats, not least Margot Fonteyn, and this Insight event offered audiences the chance to see the Company's current crop of dancers follow in their footsteps as they rehearse extracts from the work.

As well as exploring the history and choreography of the ballet, its fairytale origins were discussed by Dr Jenny Bavidge, Academic Director for English Literature at University of Cambridge.

For notifications about future YouTube live streams, subscribe to the Royal Opera House channel:

The ballet will be relayed live to cinemas around the world on 28 February 2017. Find your nearest cinema and sign up to our mailing list.

The Production is sponsored by Coutts and generously supported by Sarah and Lloyd Dorfman, Peter Lloyd and in memory of Ellen Burkhardt, with additional philanthropic support from The Royal Opera House Endowment Fund. Original production (2006) made possible by The Linbury Trust, Sir Simon and Lady Robertson and Marina Hobson OBE.

Love the way the insight evenings are livestreamed now. I live 200 miles from the ROH and so can never attend without a lot of expense, and tickets are all normally sold out anyway. Really looking forward to this. Well done ROH!!

This is the first time I've ever seen an live streamed insight evening and it was absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much ROH for making it accessible to people all over the world. I loved the history of the dance and really enjoyed watching the dancers rehearse. How brave of the dancers to let us see them developing and perfecting their roles. I now want to buy a ticket and come and see The Sleeping Beauty at the ROH.
