In the production, Plácido Domingo makes a major role debut as Nabucco, alongside Liudmyla Monastyrska, highly acclaimed for her performance as the terrifying anti-heroine Abigaille. Nicola Luisotti conducts.
Verdi considered Nabucco – first performed in 1842 – the first significant work of his artistic career. A biblical epic, the opera features some stand-out numbers for the chorus, including the Hebrew song of exile 'Va, pensiero', considered by many to be Italy's unofficial national anthem.
