The Royal Opera House will host the Royal Academy of Dance's prestigious ballet competition for the first time in September 2020.

The competition, formerly known as the Genée will be renamed the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition effective from 2020 to mark the 100th anniversary of the iconic dancer's birth.

The competition will be hosted in the UK for the first time in five years to coincide with the Academy’s centenary. 2020 also marks the first time that the competition will be held at London’s Royal Opera House, offering aspiring young dancers the chance to perform on one of the world’s most iconic stages. The jury will be chaired by RAD President Darcey Bussell and is a highlight of the Academy's 100th birthday celebrations.

Open to dancers aged 15-19 who have trained in the RAD syllabus, the competition will offers entrants the unique opportunity to work with world-renowned choreographers and teachers for five days at the Royal Ballet School, before performing at the semi-finals, and then at the final at the Royal Opera House.

Past Genée medallists have gone on to work for some of the best ballet companies around the world. Genée medallists who have gone on to work for The Royal Ballet include Steven McRae, Alexander Campbell, Lauren Cuthbertson and Francesca Hayward.

It isn't clear from the above whether the actual final will be on the main stage or in the Linbury, nor whether this is to be a ticketed event available for booking.
