The winners of the fourth annual Critics’ Circle Awards have been announced, with composer George Benjamin receiving the award for Outstanding Musician, following the international success of his opera Written on Skin.
Composed to a libretto by Martin Crimp and directed by Katie Mitchell, Written on Skin had its UK premiere at the Royal Opera House in March 2013. The production was a great hit, winning the South Bank Sky Arts Award, and being hailed by the New York Times as a 'standout opera of recent decades'.
George Benjamin will collaborate again with Martin Crimp for a new full-length opera commissioned by The Royal Opera. The as-yet-untitled opera will have its world premiere at Covent Garden in 2018.
Soprano Mary Bevan made her Royal Opera debut in 2013 with Mahogany Opera Group’s The Firework-Maker’s Daughter. In January, Mary will appear in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, a co-production between the Royal Opera House and the Roundhouse.
Composer Charlotte Bray has had works commissioned by some of the most established ensembles, including Britten Sinfonia, Opera North, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Charlotte is currently writing a short piece for the Royal Opera House’s Youth Opera Company which will be performed later in the 2014/15 Season.
