Due to pregnancy, Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča has withdrawn from the title role in The Royal Opera’s production of Carmen, which opens in December 2013. Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili will sing the role on 16, 19 and 22 December, making her debut with The Royal Opera. Casting for the performances on 3, 6 and 9 January 2014 will be announced in due course.

Anita Rachvelishvili has previously sung the role of Carmen in Berlin, Verona, La Scala, Milan, and at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Her most recent performances include Amneris in Aida in Detroit and Carmen in Torino.

The rest of the cast is unchanged.

  1. When I book for an opera or ballet it is because of the artist(s) I wish to see. Lately, the ROH has changed a few of the artists and now they have done it yet again with Carmen and instead of Elina Garanca I am now to see Anita Rachvelishvili. Having just watched a video of Rachvlishvili playing Carmen at La Scala I doubt if I will enjoy her performance, which seems amateurish to say the least, hey ho!

      Hi Valerie,

Sorry you're disappointed but occasionally casts have to change due to reasons out of our control. We do endeavour to communicate changes as soon as we can.

I think you underestimate Anita and should give her a chance. Also, think that sound is quite different on YouTube vs real performance. A couple of friends sew her in Met and were impressed by her performance. I will go to her Carmen debut.

  2. Saw Anita tonight at the Berlin Staatsoper's season opener of Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Tsar Bride" under Barenboim and she received one of the biggest storms of bravos I've ever experienced.

  3. Anita is maybe the best singer for Carmen.... go and will not be disappointed

Valerie, Carmen is a very demanding role, we are looking forward to Anita singing, i`d like to see you have the nerve to get up on stage and have a go at this role.
Good luck Anita, We can`t wait to hear you.

I have just been privileged enough to go to today's Schools' Matinee. To watch the entire place erupt when Anita came to take her bow was highly emotive. Actually, I cried buckets! Whoever comes to see Carmen and watches the enormously talented Anita sing will be well rewarded. Amazing! You all were! I will never forget this, neither will forty-three 10 year olds from Bristol. Thank you so much for giving them all this phenomenal experience! Overwhelmingly brilliant...

Just heard/seen Anita Rachvelishvili in the schools matinee performance.... apart from brief pitch issues at the very start, she was a splendid Carmen.... superb voice, great colour, tone, range, and utterly convincing. What a treat!
