Jerome Robbins (West Side Story) was one of the finest choreographers of the 20th century. In their mixed programme The Royal Ballet dance two of his most characteristic works: Afternoon of a Faun and In the Night. Each is an insightful portrait of human relationships, at turns witty, compassionate and elegiac.

The programme closes with Kenneth MacMillan's Song of the Earth. MacMillan set Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in 1958, creating an elegiac work of breathtaking beauty.
