Engender

The Royal Opera's inaugural Engender is a weekend of events that put women working in opera at the front and centre.

There are no upcoming events scheduled at the moment. The most recent was on 14 July 2019.

Background

Engender is a celebration of, and platform for, women in opera, and an investment in their future. The launch of The Royal Opera’s Engender initiative is a weekend of events that aims to highlight the wealth of female talent both onstage and behind the scenes, and provide a platform for conversations exploring gender in opera today. With a focus on new work, you can expect first glimpses of work in progress, performances from emerging artists and the opportunity to debate the future of opera with practitioners working across the artform.

The Royal Opera's Engender initiative is part of the Royal Opera House's commitment to promoting diversity in the arts, both on and off the stage. Alongside Engender, this Season The Royal Opera's Jette Parker Young Artists Programme hosts two Women Conductor courses, seeking to place women at the heart of classical conducting and change the landscape for women conductors across the globe. Find out more about our Women Conductor courses.

Engender 2019 includes a series of Open Studios. The Royal Opera, in partnership with the Librettist's Network, are opening the doors on the creative process, as three teams of women creatives present their ideas for three new operatic works. After an open application process, in which composer/librettist teams were asked to submit proposals for new operas, three pairs have been chosen to develop their concepts for a work-in-progress presentation featuring fragments of performance and discussion about their material, as part of the Engender weekend. This is a chance to get an insight into how opera is developed, and to see up close how emerging and established women opera-makers work.

The Royal Opera is launching the Engender Network, an opportunity for women working in or studying for a career in opera to connect in person four times a year.

Our edition of Live at Lunch on Friday 12 July 2019 will form part of Engender. The programme will include performances by mezzo-soprano Lore Lixenberg.
