From 3 December 2018 to 7 January 2019 we celebrate ten years of the Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season with screenings of great operas and ballets.
Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9DD
This event is part of the Winter 2018/19 season.
Presented by Music Director of The Royal Opera Antonio Pappano, this screening is a chance to see Jonas Kaufmann’s debut as Otello, one of the most challenging and rewarding roles for a tenor. Based on Shakespeare’s tragic play, Verdi’s opera is one of his greatest achievements, with musical highlights including Otello and Desdemona’s radiant Act I love duet, Iago’s demonic ‘Credo’ and Desdemona’s pensive ‘Willow Song’. Keith Warner’s production explores Otello’s position as an outsider, with designs that use light and dark colours to reflect the contrasting innocence of Desdemona and evil of Iago.
Soprano Maria Agresta is a lyrical and passionate Desdemona, while baritone Marco Vratogna perfectly captures Iago’s sardonic villainy. This performance is conducted by Antonio Pappano, one of the greatest interpreters of Verdi’s music today and which was streamed live to cinemas worldwide in Summer 2017.
The performance lasts about 3 hours 10 minutes, including one interval
Sung in Italian with English subtitles
