Background

Director Richard Eyre presents this screening of La traviata. A glamorous Parisian setting, a tragic romance and soaring, memorable music – it’s no wonder that Verdi’s La traviata is the world’s most popular opera. Richard Eyre’s 1994 production is one of The Royal Opera’s great successes, vividly evoking both the glamour of high society in 1840s Paris and the underlying loneliness of the unforgettable heroine, Violetta.

This performance was relayed live to cinemas and BP Big Screens in June 2009, and is released on DVD. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano conducts (in his only performances of La traviata with The Royal Opera). The cast is led by superstar soprano Renée Fleming in one of her rare performances as the courtesan Violetta, with tenor Joseph Calleja as her impassioned lover Alfredo. Baritone Thomas Hampson offers a sympathetic interpretation of Alfredo’s stern father, Giorgio Germont.
