Background

Director John Copley presents this screening of Puccini’s La bohème, one of the most popular operas of all time. This heartbreaking depiction of young love in 19th-century Paris it is full of wit, pathos and glorious melodies. John Copley’s now classic production with detailed period sets and costumes, brings to life the joys and sorrows of young love in the artists’ quarter of Paris.

This screening is of the 2009 revival of the opera, which was relayed to cinemas and filmed for DVD in December 2009. Teodor Ilincai and Hibla Gerzmava, rising stars who have since launched international operatic careers, are the poet Rodolfo and his lover Mimì. Andris Nelsons, now a regular conductor with The Royal Opera, makes his Royal Opera debut.
