This event is part of the Winter 2018/19 season.
Susan Bullock of The Royal Opera presents this exciting screening of Gloriana. Britten wrote the opera to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Director Richard Jones draws parallels between the dawn of this ‘second Elizabethan age’ and the reign of Elizabeth I by staging Gloriana as a Tudor pageant performed for royalty in the 1950s. The colourful designs by Ultz, with sumptuous Elizabethan costumes for the principals, are a particular delight. Gloriana was screened live to cinemas worldwide in June 2013. The superb British cast are led by dramatic soprano Susan Bullock as the imperious yet self-doubting Elizabeth I and Toby Spence as the charming, power-hungry Earl of Essex. Paul Daniel conducts Britten’s score which contains music that perfectly evokes the Tudor age, including Essex’s wistful lute songs, and the catchy Tudor dances in Act II.
The performance lasts about 3 hours including one interval
Sung in English with subtitles
