Wayne McGregor’s Chroma provides the thrilling start for an intense programme of great dance works from The Royal Ballet. Chroma was a popular hit from its premiere: the exciting, energy driven choreography of McGregor, minimalist design by John Pawson, and Joby Talbot’s music both composed by him and arranged from the White Stripes. Christopher Wheeldon’s Tryst shows his trademark style, classically influenced and with beautifully evocative stage images subtly lit. Contemporary and haunting, the music is conducted by its renowned composer, James MacMillan. Balanchine’s ballet classic, the exuberant Symphony in C completes the programme. To Bizet’s youthful score, patterns of soloists and ensembles complement and contrast each other until the exhilarating finale brings everyone together for an uplifting climax to the ballet and to this whole Royal Ballet programme.
