Background Information Interviews/Articles/Reviews

This mixed programme of recent and new short works is a great way to discover the excitement of The Royal Ballet and of today's clasically rooted dance. The world premiere at the centre of the evening is from the rising talent of Royal Ballet trained Liam Scarlett. He creates his first main stage work for the Company to Poulenc's powerful Double Piano Concertro, conducted by the Music Director of The Royal Ballet, Barry Wordsworth.  There is immediate contrast in the first revival of Christopher Wheeldon's Electric Counterpoint, with music by J.S Bach and Steve Reich. This award-winning ballet is cutting edge in its exploration of the idea of performance: dancers appear against video of themselves, becoming at the same time soloists and their own corps de ballet. Completing the programme is Mats Ek's witty, dramatic and unique take on the story of Carmen and her erstwhile lover Don José, set to Bizet's ever-popular and tuneful music in a wonderfully inventive arrangement. This is a programme of variety, with the sheer energy and versatility of world-class dancers.
