Choreographic Associates

ROH2 set up this programme to complement the existing Associate Artists, and to provide a structured, time limited programme for emerging choreographers which would provide access to the wide range of work and opportunities being developed across the Royal Opera House.  The programme is managed and co-ordinated by ROH2, and Theresa Beattie supports the artists and the activity on a freelance basis as Project Manager.

Choreographers Freddie Opoku-Addaie, Laїla Diallo and Sarah Dowling were appointed in September 2009 and finished at the end of March 2012 with performances of their New Dance Commissions. The choreographers were selected for the quality of their work and potential for development plus the match between their aspirations and stage of development and the benefits provided by the scheme.

The scheme aims to affect a step change for the participants in terms of the artistic quality of their work, the production values they can achieve, expanding their professional networks and raising their profile.

Benefits of the scheme:
 • Association with ROH and a sense of ‘belonging’ which is often absent for choreographers working independently
 • A bursary commission for research and creation of a short new work premiered on a triple bill in the Linbury Studio Theatre in March 2012 as part of the ROH2 programme. Marketing and press support for commission
 • Mentoring and planning support from consultant, Theresa Beattie
 • Opportunity to work on selected projects with ROH Education
 • Opportunity to participate in the Royal Ballet Arrows scheme
 • Free studio space at ROH, subject to availability
 • Attending main stage and Linbury dress rehearsals
 • Observing Royal Ballet and Royal Opera rehearsals
 • Attending Education Insight events
 • Access to ROH staff expertise

We will be inviting new choreographers to take part in the programme from September 2012 for two years.  The participants will be identified through a process of consultation between ROH2, other key artists and managers based at ROH, and advice from sector leaders.  We will announce the new Choreographic Associates in spring 2012.
