ROH2

Integral to the work of the Royal Opera House is its contemporary programming. ROH2 adds diversity to the Royal Opera House programme and gives opportunities for performers and audiences to experiment and collaborate in vibrant, creative ways.

ROH2 productions mostly take place in the Linbury Studio Theatre, Clore Studio Upstairs and the Paul Hamlyn Hall, with specially produced and commissioned work and a programme of festivals, artist development initiatives and special projects.

PROGRAMMES

ROH2 Commissions and Productions

Each Season, ROH2 commissions and produces new full length and short opera and dance pieces in the Linbury Studio Theatre and other spaces in the building.  We work with composers, choreographers, designers, puppeteers and visual artists to create new works that work within the context of the art forms of the Royal Opera House, while extending the boundaries, combining disciplines and attracting new audiences to opera and dance. We plan around two years in advance, and frequently develop work with our Associate Artists and through our artist development programmes, as well as commissioning artists who are creating work for ROH for the first time.

Festivals

ROH2 produces, hosts and takes part in a number of festivals each Season.  These offer the opportunity for a wide range of artists and companies to perform at the Royal Opera House, and for audiences to attend new work within a relaxed and informal atmosphere.  Additionally, by hosting London wide or national festivals such as Dance Umbrella and the London International Mime Festival, ROH is able to provide excellent spaces, marketing, press and technical support, as well as a high profile platform for companies performing in London or the UK for the first time.

One of the largest festivals produced by ROH2 is the annual Deloitte Ignite, which launches the new Season at the beginning of September.  The festival is curated by a high profile artist or partner, and shows new site specific work and performances across all the public spaces in the building, as well as opening up some backstage and working areas.

Partnerships

Partnerships are a key aspect of the work of the Royal Opera House, and ROH2 provides a flexible and responsive link to a range of artists and companies, as well as being able to take part in and support a range of initiatives across the arts sector.  ROH2 works closely with dance venues and producers in London and nationally, as a member of the National Dance Network, and as part of the planning group for projects such as the British Dance Edition.  We also work closely with a number of opera and dance companies in terms of artistic planning, and supporting new work through commissioning and co-producing.

Artist Development Programmes

A central part of the work of ROH2 is supporting artist development in a number of ways.  We run an Opera Development Programme throughout the year, which provides workshop time for composers creating new work, a range of courses and the opportunity for commissions from the small scale through to chamber pieces in the Linbury Studio Theatre.  We have a number of Associate Artists working in a range of disciplines, including composers, choreographers and a scientist.  We facilitate opportunities for independent artists and emerging practitioners to be immersed in the wide range of artistic practice within the Royal Opera House, to benefit from opportunities to work in various departments and with The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet, and to extend and develop their own work as a result.

On the Road

The Royal Opera House regularly takes its work On the Road, encouraging people to engage with and participate in opera and dance. Our ambition is to connect with new and existing audiences across the UK.

The On the Road programme is currently focusing work primarily in the North West and the East regions of the UK, building relationships with organisations based in those areas and developing new initiatives in partnership. On the Road currently works with key partners, The Lowry in Salford and DanceEast in Ipswich as well as a range of other local organisations. Activity largely takes place through spring and summer residencies, with some projects taking place throughout the year.

Activity On the Road includes education projects with families, schools and communities, small-scale touring productions which take our work to new settings; touring exhibitions showcasing the history of our productions and of the Royal Opera House itself and live relays of opera and ballet to Big Screens around the country. Opportunities are also available for groups engaged with On the Road events, to visit the Royal Opera House and participate in activities at our Covent Garden home.
