Description
Plácido Domingo, a legend for his triumphs as a tenor, assumes Verd's ultimate challenge for baritone: Simon Boccanegra, the corsair who becomes Doge of Genoa. In Elijah Moshinsky's classic Royal Opera House production, its imagery evoking Old Master paintings, Domingo's commanding Boccanegra confronts Ferruccio Furanetto's imposing Fiesco. Marina Poplavskaya, touching and spirited as Boccenegra's daughter, is paired with the ardent Gabriele of Joseph Calleja. Capturing the muted glow of this profoundly moving score with affection and authority is the Royal Opera's Music Director, Antonio Pappano.
