ROH Recommended Recording

If there is an acid test for any lieder singer, it is undoubtedly Schubert’s Winterreise, a cycle of twenty-four settings of poems by Wilhelm Müller that is generally regarded as the pinnacle of lieder singing, a sequence of songs as thrilling for listeners as it is for the performer. After many years of working together and numerous performances of Winterreise, Jonas Kaufmann and Helmut Deutsch finally commit this work to disc.

'The Winterreise can have the same sort of cathartic effect as a Greek drama: the emotional experience purges the soul. Schubert expressed these emotional depths with a clarity and a simplicity that I ultimately find consoling and that allow me to regain my own inner balance.' Jonas Kaufmann
