Sir Antonio Pappano and the Roman orchestra and chorus of which he is music director now follow their award-winning recording of Verdi's Requiem with the four sacred settings which the composer wrote at the end of his long life, when he was still sceptical in the face of religious doctrine but no less masterful in the translation onto music of human awe in the face of the numinous, qualities also exemplified by the two rarely recorded companion pieces here: the Libera me was written in memory of Rossini, and became a draft of the Requiem.
