Britten's opera The Turn of the Screw is a beguiling and chilling dramatisation of the Henry James ghost story novella. The 'theme and variations' structure, coupled with rhythmic and melodic motifs, guides us through the increasingly claustrophobic atmosphere. The supernatural and the corruption of innocence are depicted through delicate, simplistic harmonies, illuminated by the enticing and glistening timbres of the harp and celesta.
