Description
The world premiere of The Minotaur by composer Harrison Birtwistle and librettist David Harsent, commissioned by The Royal Opera, brings the Greek mythological character to the stage. Part-man part-beast, the Minotaur is trapped in the labyrinth, and longs to discover his true identity and voice. Theseus, sent to the island of Crete as part of a debt sacrifice, is determined to kill the monstrous creature. He attracts the attention of Ariadne, half-sister and keeper of The Minotaur, and it is her help that ensures his success.
Captured here in High Definition video and surround sound, the cast is led by a sublime John Tomlinson as the Minotaur. They rise to great heights under the direction of Antonio Pappano, whose navigation of the monumental musical landscapes carries an intense authority.
