The Royal Opera

The Jette Parker Young Artists present a fully staged performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’s operatic ghost story, in one of the highlights of Meet the Young Artists Week.

Most recent performance

There are currently no scheduled performances of The Lighthouse: Meet the Young Artists Week. It was last on stage 22–24 October 2015 as part of the Autumn 2015/16 season.

Introduction

Three officers are questioned about their discovery of an abandoned lighthouse. Gradually they begin to re-enact the last hours of the missing keepers. As fog envelops the lighthouse, the keepers’ fears come to the surface.

Background

The Jette Parker Young Artists Programme supports the artistic development of young professional singers, conductors, directors and répétiteurs. Their fully staged performance in the Linbury Studio Theatre as part of Meet the Young Artists Week is one of the highlights of the new Season.

For MYAW 2015 the Young Artists present Peter Maxwell Davies’s 1980 chamber opera The Lighthouse, in a new production directed by Jette Parker Associate Director Greg Eldridge. Maxwell Davies wrote his own libretto for this haunting, claustrophobic work, taking inspiration from the mysterious real-life disappearance of three lighthouse keepers in the Flannan Isles in 1900. The Lighthouse is a modern classic, and is the only opera to have been given three different productions in the Linbury Studio Theatre.
