It’s 1930s Paris. Charismatic chanteuse Yvette Pépin has lured the great guitarist Django Reinhardt to her club, to star in her bonkers reimagining of the Orpheus myth.
Django Reinhardt, Edith Piaf and 1930s Paris are the inspirations for Orpheus, Little Bulb Theatre’s acclaimed take on the ancient myth. Since their award-winning 2008 show Crocosima, Little Bulb Theatre has won praise for its brilliantly musical and innovatively theatrical shows.
Orpheus is set in a Paris music hall. Chanteuse Yvette Pépin is to star as Eurydice in her own adaptation of the Orpheus myth, with the great guitarist Django Reinhardt in the title role. A small troupe of actor musicians complete the ensemble, rapidly standing in for the other characters and performing the eclectic score, which ranges across Hot Club jazz, French chanson and extracts from Monteverdi’s opera. By turns hilarious, breathtakingly inventive and heartbreaking, Orpheus is a unique theatrical experience.
