Since his appointment as Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet in 2006, Wayne McGregor has won international renown for bringing his unique language of movement into dialogue with the vocabularies of classicism. One-act works such as Infra and Chroma, alongside the stunning full-length ballet Woolf Works, combine his fluid, virtuoso style with an intense interest in the interplay between meaning and abstraction.
In Multiverse, his latest work for the Company, McGregor collaborates with one of the most influential figures in contemporary music, composer Steve Reich. The score juxtaposes Reich’s famous 1965 looped tape work It’s Gonna Rain with Runner, a new, specially commissioned work. Multiverse takes inspiration from the self-reproducing journeys within Reich’s music to explore ideas of genesis, repeating histories and possible futures. With designs by acclaimed Pakistani artist Rashid Rana, this production is a landmark collaboration between leading innovators from three disciplines of contemporary art.
