Elves and the Shoemaker is based on the Grimm Brothers' fairytale. A poor and kind-hearted shoemaker receives some much-needed help when his last piece of leather is transformed into the most magnificent pair of shoes overnight. He discovers that not only are the shoes beautiful; they are also magical. Who is the mysterious maker of these marvellous shoes?
He and his wife stay up and see elves hard at work making shoes. The shoemaker and his wife make clothes for the elves as a gift. The elves take the clothes and disappear.
Northern Ballet is one of the UK's top touring companies. Their series Short Ballets for Small People has quickly won acclaim for its entertaining fusion of enchanting storytelling with breathtaking dance. The first in the series, Ugly Duckling, was adapted for television for BBC CBeebies and went on to win a Children's BAFTA. Elves and the Shoemaker is the third in the series, after Three Little Pigs and The Ugly Duckling.
This retelling of the famous Brothers Grimm story is choreographed by the Northern Ballet's ballet master Daniel de Andrade and set to an original score by composer Philip Feeney, performed live. With trampolining elves, magical dancing shoes and a heart-warming story, Elves and the Shoemaker is set to be another family hit, once again introducing a new generation to the magic of ballet.
