Biography

Azerbaijani tenor Yusif Eyvazov made his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as Macduff (Macbeth). He returned in the 2018/19 Season as Don Alvaro (La forza del destino). 

Eyvazov was born in Algiers and studied in Italy with Franco Corelli and Ghena Dimitrova. A dramatic tenor with a specialism in verismo, he has sung for many of the world’s major opera companies. Notable performances include Dick Johnson (La fanciulla del West) and Calaf (Turandot) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Gherman (The Queen of Spades), Don Carlo and Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) for the Bolshoi Theatre, Andrea Chénier for La Scala, Milan, Macduff (Macbeth) and Maurizio (Adriana Lecouvreur) for the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, Cavaradossi (Tosca) for Berlin State Opera, Calaf for Vienna State Opera, Manrico (Il trovatore) for Paris Opéra, Radames (Aida) and Des Grieux for Salzburg Festival, Andrea Chénier and Faust (Mefistofele) in Prague and Radames for Arena di Verona. 

Eyvazov has performed in concerts and opera galas worldwide, often with his wife, soprano Anna Netrebko, including for the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Seoul Arts Centre, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Berlin Waldbühne, Four Seasons Centre in Toronto, Müpa Budapest, New Wave Hall in Sochi, Cologne Philharmonie, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Moscow, Royal Albert Hall, London and Hamburg Laeiszhalle, and on tour throughout Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. In 2017/18 Eyvazov and Netrebko released Romanza, their CD of songs by Igor Krutoy for Deutsche Grammophon. Eyvazov also appears on Netrebko’s recording Verismo
