British conductor Thomas Payne joins the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme from September 2018, working primarily with The Royal Ballet as as cover conductor for Mayerling, La bayadère and The Nutcracker. He also conducts a scene from Le nozze di Figaro in the JPYAP Summer Performance on the main stage.
Payne studied violin at Birmingham Conservatoire and conducting independently, among others with Steuart Bedford and Sian Edwards at Dartington Summer School. Opera engagements include chorus master for Tristan und Isolde, Der fliegende Holländer and Fidelio for Longborough Festival Opera and assistant conductor on English Eccentrics for British Youth Opera, conducting Southbank Sinfonia for the cover performance. A keen advocate of contemporary opera, he has conducted a number of new works including James Oldham’s Off the Beaten Track and Bastien and Bastienne, Ulf Deither Soyka’s Ninya and Edward Lambert’s The Cloak and Dagger Affair for the Tête-a-Tête Festival. Ballet engagements include assistant conductor on The Nutcracker, Theme and Variations, The King Dances and Enigma Variations.
As orchestral conductor, he maintains relationships with a number of orchestras as Musical Director of Leamington Sinfonia and The Ludlow Orchestra as well as a guest conductor with Sinfonia of Birmingham and Orchestra Vitae. He is also Musical Director of Shrewsbury Cantata choir and co-conductor for Hereford String Orchestra.
