Tai Oney

Biography

American countertenor Tai Oney made his Royal Opera debut in 2015 as Hamlet (The Firework-Maker’s Daughter). He returns in the 2017/18 Season to sing Peisander (The Return of Ulysses).

Oney studied at Stetson University, Boston University, the New England Conservatory of Music and the Royal College of Music. Operatic engagements include Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) for Finnish National Opera, Oronte (Riccardo Primo) for Opera Theatre of St Louis, Adolfo (Faramondo) for Brisbane Baroque, Daliso (Il duello amoroso) for the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Athamas (Semele) with Opera Boston and Boston Baroque, Arsamene (Xerxes) for Longborough Festival and Teseo (Arianna in Creta) and Tirinto (Imeneo) for the London Handel Festival. His other roles include Piero della Francesca (Dove’s Seven Angels), Ottone (L’incoronazione di Poppea) and Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).

Oney’s wide concert repertory includes Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Paukenmesse, Bach’s St John Passion, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Honegger’s King David. He has also appeared in concert with English Touring Opera.
