Scottish director and designer Stewart Laing made his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season designing sets and costumes for La bohème, directed by Richard Jones.
Laing studied theatre design at Central School of Art and Design. He is Artistic Director of Untitled Projects, which he founded in 1998, and Associate Director with National Theatre of Scotland. Directing credits with Untitled Projects include The End of Eddy, the J.G. Ballard Project, Blind_Sight, Slope, An Argument about Sex, The Salon Project, Paul Bright’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner and Slope Redux. Further directing credits include many productions for Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, THEM! For National Theatre of Scotland, Ten Plagues for Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, Creditors at the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh, Les Parents terribles and Titus Andronicus for Dundee Rep Theatre and The Sewing Group for Royal Court. Opera directing credits include La bohème and Così fan tutte for Scottish Opera, the world premiere of Sawer’s The Skating Rink for Garsington, Les Mamelles de Tirésias and L’Heure espagnole for Grange Park Opera, Tosca for NorrlandsOperan and La fanciulla del West and Dead Man Walking for Malmö Opera.
As a designer Laing works exclusively with Jones, for whom he has designed many productions including Titanic (Broadway), Peter Grimes (La Scala, Milan), The Capture of Troy and From Morning to Midnight (English National Opera), Skin Deep (Opera North), L’Augellino Belverde (Batignano), The Hairy Ape (Old Vic and Park Avenue Amory, New York), All’s Well that Ends Well (New York Shakespeare Festival), Holy Mothers (Royal Court) and Rumpelstiltskin (Birmingham Contemporary Music Group).
