Danish bass-baritone Sten Byriel made his Royal Opera House debut in 1995 as Farfarello (The Love for Three Oranges) for Royal Danish Opera. He made his Royal Opera debut in 2017 as Russell (The Exterminating Angel), a role he created at the opera’s premiere at the 2016 Salzburg Festival.
Byriel was born in Horsens and studied at Aarhus University, the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus/Aalborg, and the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He was a member of Royal Danish Opera’s Opera Academy 1982–6 and of the Danish National Opera Chorus and Bayreuth Festival Chorus 1979–82. He made his soloist debut in 1985 as Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) for Royal Danish Opera and has since sung regularly there and for companies including Vienna Volksoper, Berlin State Opera, Opera Vlaanderen, Théâtre du Châtelet, Bavarian State Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, Grande Théâtre de Genève and Norwegian National Opera. His many roles have included Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Leporello and the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Rocco (Fidelio), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Macbeth, Daland (Der fliegende Holländer), Alberich (Der Ring des Nibelungen), King Marke (Tristan und Isolde), Méphistophélès (Faust), Capulet (Roméo et Juliette), Varlaam (Boris Godunov), Escamillo (Carmen), Henrik (Maskarade), Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier), Doctor (Wozzeck), Dr Kolenatý (The Makropulos Case), Kovalyov (The Nose), Trinity Moses (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny), Man (Von heute auf morgen), Count Waldner (Arabella), Nekrotzar and Astradamors (Le Grand Macabre) and Hotel Manager (Powder her Face).
Byriel has sung in concert with orchestras including Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Esbjerg Ensemble, Danish Sinfonietta, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
