Austrian bass Stefan Cerny makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2019/20 Season as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte).
Cerny studied at the Conservatory in his native Vienna and became a member of Vienna Volksoper in 2001 and remained a member of the ensemble there until 2017. He has since sung many roles for Vienna Volksoper, including Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Sarastro, Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Daland (Der fliegende Holländer), Lord Syndham (Zar und Zimmermann), Luther and Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Skula (Prince Igor) and Timur (Turandot). He also appears regularly for Theater an der Wien, where roles include Rocco (Fidelio), Giorgio Talbot (Maria Stuarda), King Ludwig VI (Euryanthe), Doctor (Wozzeck) and Swallow (Peter Grimes). Other appearances include Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) and Sarastro for Munich’s Gärtnerplatztheater, Rocco in Cologne and for Vienna State Opera and Sarastro for Komische Oper Berlin.
Czerny has worked with many leading directors, including Robert Carsen, Peter Konwitschny, Harry Kupfer, Christof Loy, Marco Arturo Marelli and Christine Mielitz.
