English soprano Sophie Bevan made her Royal Opera debut in September 2013 as Woodbird (Siegfried), and has since returned to sing Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Ilia (Idomeneo), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Antigone (Oedipe), Sophie von Faninal (Der Rosenkavalier) and Beatriz (The Exterminating Angel, role creation). In the 2018/19 Season she returns to sing Woodbird.

Bevan grew up in Berkshire in a musical family. She studied at the Royal College of Music, where she won the Queen Mother Rose Bowl Award. She is the recipient of the 2010 Critics’ Circle Award for Exceptional Young Talent, The Times Breakthrough Award at the 2012 South Bank Sky Arts Awards and the Young Singer of the Year Award at the 2013 International Opera Awards. Her roles for English National Opera have included Hermione (The Winter’s Tale, world premiere), Télaire (Castor and Pollux), Polinessa (Radamisto), Despina (Così fan tutte), Yum-Yum (The Mikado) and Léïla (The Pearl Fishers). Other operatic appearances include Beatriz for Salzburg Festival, Michal (Saul) for Glyndebourne Festival, Pamina for Teatro Real, Madrid, Susanna and Pamina for Garsington Opera, Woodbird for Lucerne Festival, Ninetta (La gazza ladra) for Frankfurt Opera, the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen for Welsh National Opera and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) in concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons.

Bevan has worked with such conductors as Laurence Cummings, Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Daniel Harding, Charles Mackerras, Neville Marriner and Antonio Pappano. She has appeared in concert with leading British orchestras and ensembles in venues such as the Wigmore Hall and the Barbican and at the Aldeburgh, Edinburgh and BBC Proms festivals. She regularly performs with pianist Sebastian Wybrew.
