Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva made her Royal Opera debut in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Winners concert in July 2012, and has since sung Musetta (La bohème), Marguerite (Faust), Violetta (La traviata), Micaëla (Carmen) and in the Life Reimagined Gala. In the 2016/17 Season she returns to sing Norma and Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann).

Yoncheva studied piano and voice in Plovdiv and singing at the Geneva Conservatory. She was a member of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix and in her early career focussed on Early and Baroque repertory, her engagements including Phani/Zima (Les Indes galantes) on European tour with Christie, La Fortuna (L’incoronazione di Poppea) for Glyndebourne Festival, Giunone (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria) for Teatro Real, Madrid, and Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare) in Reims and Versailles. She has since included Classical and Romantic roles in her repertory, engagements including Violetta (La traviata) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Berlin State Opera, Zürich Opera and in Monte Carlo and Valencia, Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) for the Aix-en-Provence Festival and in Monte Carlo, Mimì (La bohème) for the Metropolitan Opera and Bavarian State Opera, Countess (Le nozze di Figaro) in Baden-Baden, the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor for Paris Opéra, Leïla (Les Pêcheurs de perles) for Opéra-Comique, Iris for Festival de Radio France et Montpellier and Desdemona (Otello) for the Metropolitan Opera.

Yoncheva’s many awards include the Special Prize of Les Amis du Festival at the 2007 Aix-en-Provence Festival, first prize in Operalia (2010) and Newcomer of the Year (Singer) at the 2015 ECHO Klassik Awards.
