Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva made her Royal Opera debut in Plácido Domingo's Operalia Winners concert in July 2012, and returned in spring 2013 to sing Musetta (La bohème). In the 2013/14 Season she sings Marguerite (Faust).

Yoncheva was born in 1981. She studied piano and voice in Plovdiv and singing at the Geneva Conservatory. In 2007 she was a member of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix and in her early career focussed on Early and Baroque repertory, major engagements including Phani/Zima (Les Indes galantes) on European tour with Christie, La Fortuna (L’incoronazione di Poppea) at the Glyndebourne Festival, Giunone (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria) at the Teatro Real, Madrid, Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare) in Reims and Versailles, Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea) and Poppea (Agrippina) in Lille and Dijon and the title role in Thaïs for Novaya Opera, Moscow. More recently she has included Classical and Romantic roles in her repertory, with engagements including Léïla (Les Pêcheurs de perles) for the Opéra-Comique, Violetta (La traviata) in Monte Carlo and Valencia, Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Gilda (Rigoletto) at the Arena di Verona and the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor for Paris Opéra.

Yoncheva's many awards include the Special Prize of Les Amis du Festival at the 2007Aix-en-Provence Festival and First Prize in Operalia, 2010.
