Sam Furness

Biography

Welsh tenor Sam Furness makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season as Novice (Billy Budd), and also sings Holy Fool (Boris Godunov) with the Company in 2019.

Furness was a choral scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge, and went on to study singing at the Royal Academy of Music. He sings regularly for Garsington Opera, where his repertory includes Jaquino (Fidelio), Baron Lummer (Intermezzo), Flamand (Capriccio) and Gaspar (the world premiere of David Sawer’s The Skating Rink). Other appearances include Spirit of the Masque (Gloriana) and Novice for Teatro Real, Madrid, Sailor (Tristan und Isolde) and Jaquino for Longborough Festival, Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw), Ferrando (Così fan tutte) and Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) for NI Opera, Vitek (The Makropulos Affair) for Opera Vlaanderen, Don José (Carmen) for Jyväskylän Ooppera, Hoffmann (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) for English Touring Opera, Joe (La fanciulla del West) for English National Opera, Albert Herring for the Maggio Musicale, Florence, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse and Opera Holland Park, and Števa (Jenufa) for Scottish Opera.

Furness has sung in recital at venues including London’s Wigmore Hall. His concert repertory includes Bach’s St Matthew Passion and St John Passion, Handel’s Messiah and Samson, Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Verdi’s Requiem and Britten’s St Nicolas.
