British playwright Rory Mullarkey makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2017/18 Season as librettist for Mark-Anthony Turnage’s opera Coraline.
Mullarkey’s awards include the James Tait Black Prize for Drama, the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright and the Royal Court’s Pinter Commission. He was Pearson Playwright at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, and has a close association with the Royal Court. His original plays include The Wolf from the Door (Royal Court), Each Slow Dusk (Pentabus Theatre/UK Tour), Cannibals and Single Sex (Royal Exchange Theatre), The Grandfathers (NT Connections and Bristol Old Vic/National Theatre) and On the Threshing Floor (Heat&Light at Hampstead Theatre).
Adaptations/translations include Aeschylus’ The Oresteia (Shakespeare’s Globe) and Aleksey Scherback’s Remembrance Day (Royal Court). Librettos include Joanna Lee’s opera The Way Back Home (English National Opera/Young Vic).
