English tenor Robin Leggate made his Royal Opera debut in 1977 as Cassio (Otello). He was a Company Principal with The Royal Opera until 2001, his many roles including Tamino and Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Count Elemer (Arabella), Narraboth (Salome), Novice (Billy Budd), Painter/Negro (Lulu), Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Mime (Das Rheingold), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), Bob Boles (Peter Grimes), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Spoletta (Tosca) and Dr Caius (Falstaff). He has since returned regularly to sing roles including Don Basilio, Monsieur Triquet (Eugene Onegin), Goro (Madama Butterfly), Serano (La donna del lago) and Emperor Altoum (Turandot).

Leggate’s opera engagements away from The Royal Opera have included Aschenbach (Death in Venice), Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw), Sir Philip Wingrave (Owen Wingrave) and Eumeo (Ulisse) for Chicago Opera Theater, Herodes (Salome) for Welsh National Opera and in South Africa, Captain Vere (Billy Budd) for Opera Vlaanderen, Washington National Opera and Pittsburgh Opera, Scribe (Khovanshchina) for English National Opera and La Monnaie, Brussels, Dr Caius for the Opéra de Lyon and Washington National Opera, High Priest (Idomeneo) for Salzburg Festival and La Scala, Milan, Loge (Das Rheingold) for Washington National Opera and Don Basilio for the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

Leggate’s concert engagements have included Britten’s War Requiem with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Washington Cathedral Choral Society and Elijah for the Maggio Musicale, Florence.
