Biography

Spanish designer Ricardo Pardo makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season as the Associate Set Designer for Hansel and Gretel and Katya Kabanova.

Pardo studied theatre design as Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design, and has a BA in Interior Architecture from the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University, Madrid, from where he also holds an MA in History of Painting and an MSc in work with materials. His opera designs include video designs for Roméo et Juliette (Ingoldstadt) and designs for Luke Styles’s opera Unborn in America (Vaults Festival), The Marriage of Figaro (King’s Head London) and The Medium (Cochrane Theatre, London). He works regularly as an associate designer with Antony McDonald: for Tristan und Isolde (Opéra national du Rhin), for Ashley Page’s ballet Alice (Croatian National Theatre) and for Julietta (English National Opera). He has also assisted Antony McDonald on many productions, and been associate director for Charles Edwards’s production of Rigoletto (Opera North).

Pardo has also designed prolifically in theatre and music theatre, including Seven Deadly Sins (Wilton’s Music Hall), Richard III (Courtyard Theatre), Mwana (TRON Theatre Glasgow and Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh), The Knight and the Crescent Hare (tour of Scotland), JukeBox (TRON Theatre and London’s Asian Centre), Olympics of the Every Day (Bellahouston Sports Centre, Glasgow) and Old Bags (Wimbledon Theatre, London). He has collaborated regularly with director Shabina Aslam. He wrote, produced, directed and edited the short film Pissed.
