Rainer Sellmaier


German set and costume designer Rainer Sellmaier makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2019/20 Season designing sets and costumes for Fidelio.

Sellmaier studied history of art and musicology in Munich, and set and costume design at Salzburg Mozarteum. He began his career as a chief set and costume designer for Theater Regensburg. Since 2006 he has collaborated regularly with director Tobias Kratzer, with whom he won the Graz Ring Award (2008). Their opera productions have included Tannhäuser (2019 Bayreuth Festival), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam), Lucio Silla (La Monnaie, Brussels), L’Africaine and La forza del destino (Frankfurt Opera), Götterdämmerung, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Le Prophète (Karlsruhe), Der Zwerg (Deutsche Oper Berlin),), Zoroastre (Komische Oper Berlin), Edgar (St Gallen) and Les Huguenots (Nuremberg and Nice).

Sellmaier has received many nominations as set/costume designer of the year from Opernwelt.
