Biography

British designer Paul Wills makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season designing The Monstrous Child in the Linbury Theatre.

Wills studied theatre design at Bretton Hall, Leeds. His opera designs include Intermezzo (Buxton Opera Festival), Rusalka (English Touring Opera), Sweetness and Badness (Welsh National Opera) and The Magic Flute (National Theatre of Palestine, Bethlehem and Ramallah).

Selected theatre work includes King Lear (Duke of York’s Theatre), Frozen (Theatre Royal, Haymarket), An Enemy of the People (Theatre Cocoon, Bunkamura Theatre, Tokyo), Measure for Measure (Theatre For A New Audience, New York), King Kong (Fugard Theatre, Cape Town), Hamlet and The Two Gentlemen of Verona (RSC and Lincoln Centre, Washington), Drum Belly (The Abbey Dublin), Lady Windemere’s Fan and Di and Viv and Rose (Vaudeville), Making Noise Quietly, Anna Christie, The Man who had all the Luck and The Cut (Donmar Warehouse) The Four Seasons (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe), Richard II, Doctor Faustus, Frontline and The Lightning Child (Shakespeare’s Globe), Juno and the Paycock and The Snapper (Gate Theatre, Dublin), Occupational Hazards and A Human Being Died That Night (Hampstead Theatre), Routes, Breathing Corpses and The Acid Test (Royal Court), Secret Theatre, Blasted and Saved (Lyric Hammersmith) and A Room with a View and Mrs Henderson Presents (Theatre Royal, Bath).
