Nick Havell

Lighting designer

Biography

English lighting designer Nick Havell is a Production Lighting Manager at the Royal Opera House. He joined the Royal Opera House in 1989, and his current work includes relighting numerous Royal Opera and Royal Ballet revivals. In 2015 he worked with Jean Kalman on the lighting design for Orfeo at the Roundhouse, and in the 2015/16 Season he works as Associate Lighting Designer with Olaf Winter on Il trovatore and designs the lighting for the Jette Parker Young Artists’s Summer Performance, 2016.

Havell was born in London and studied social anthropology at the University of Sussex. After a brief career as a musician and singer, in 1982 he started working backstage at Sadler’s Wells Theatre as a freelance lighting technician. He went on to rig, run and design lighting for a variety of amateur and professional venues and companies before joining the Royal Opera House.

Further engagements include Orlando and Aida for Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia, and Adriana Lecouvreur for Vienna State Opera and Paris Opéra.
